RYAN T. AMTMANN P.E.
vice president, client team leader
Why did you decide to become an engineer?
I don’t think I really knew that I wanted to be an engineer until my college orientation. I only applied to one college, the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and at orientation they asked about my interests. I said I enjoy math, science, and the outdoors… they said I should be a civil engineer! And that was it. It was the right choice, and I’ve never regretted it.
How long have you been with R/M?
Since 2007.
What is the best part of your job?
I love having the opportunity to mentor our newer engineers. It’s really meaningful to be able to shape someone’s career and see them succeed on their own. In my work with clients, I think my favorite thing is watching projects come to life and getting to make a difference in the community.
What do you think differentiates R/M from other firms?
We look out for our clients’ best interests and focus on the big picture. Many of our clients have been with us for a long time because they know we are always advocating for them. Our main goal is to help our clients fulfill their goals; to understand their challenges. We listen more than we speak, and we always offer honest advice.
If you could go back in time and give your 18-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Broaden your viewpoint and learn more about what’s available to you. I didn’t really think about the different colleges I could attend or the different places I could go. It’s great to see my son now exploring all his options for school. I want him to follow his passion and know what’s out there.
What are you up to when you’re not at work?
My focus is really on being available for my kids as they are growing up. The majority of my time when I’m not at work is spent being present for them. And it’s a complete joy.
What is your favorite food right now?
I’m grilling a lot right now. I don’t really have a favorite, but anything grilled I’ll eat.
