Waukesha County, WI
Project Description
Waukesha County’s Expo Center faced significant deferred maintenance with its 5 acres of paved surfaces that make up the parking lot system. In addition, the deficient storm water drainage system caused major issues with ponding water which exasperated the deterioration of pavement over time.
Ruekert & Mielke, Inc. (R/M) was initially hired in 2016 to complete a design study report to identify the alternatives for rehabilitating the parking lot areas, improving ADA compliance, enhancing the drainage systems, and summarizing findings into a 6-year capital improvement plan for upgrading the parking lots and completing the design and construction for the first two phases. R/M was hired again in 2020 to continue with design and construction phase services for subsequent phases.
R/M performed pavement analysis by rating the conditions of all pavement, curb, and drainage systems within the parking lots. R/M also evaluated different pavement rehabilitation methods along with traditional reconstruction methods. There were several pavement sections that were evaluated to provide the necessary pavement strength and durability.
Permeable pavement was utilized in some areas as one solution for fixing drainage problems. Other traditional storm water drainage elements were incorporated as well. The design was completed and contract letting was scheduled over multiple years to coincide with optimal bid timeframes. To date, R/M has been involved with the first four phases completed or scheduled in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023.
