PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The South Lake Shore Drive Reconstruction project resulted from the 7-Year Capital Improvement Plan that R/M drafted for the Village in 2018. South Lake Shore Drive was in poor overall condition, had limited pedestrian and bicycle access, and was plagued by many water main breaks.
Flooding and drainage problems were also a major problem in both the public right-of-way and within adjacent private properties due the steep slopes and limited storm water management. Three storm water detention facilities were constructed or improved as part of the project, as well as 24 roadside bioretention drywells for water quality and quantity control. Weekly project updates were shared with residents and posted on the Village website.
The roadway was transformed from a dangerous 2-lane rural road to an upgraded urban roadway with new or rehabilitated utilities. To minimize the disturbance to residents and visitors, the planned 3-year reconstruction project was shrunk to one construction season plus some spring work to have the full 2 miles of road reconstructed prior to Memorial Day of 2021.
