LOCAL UTILITY COMPANY, WI

Project Description

A large local utility company sought to build a new substation to prepare for anticipated services to fit the needs of a growing southeastern Wisconsin community. R/M was brought in on the project as a full-service survey and civil design firm.

R/M provided property boundary surveys, the resulting Certified Survey Map, civil design, wetland avoidance, constructions staking, and 3D scan as-built services.

The R/M team worked with the DNR and Kenosha County for approvals on the grading, storm water management, and erosion control plan approvals. Wetland features onsite posed a challenge, but R/M rose to the occasion and was able to design the site through intuitive minimization and avoidance measures.

The new substation was sited to minimize the transmission tie-in distance, minimizing Public Service Commission oversight in siting requirements. R/M takes pride in servicing our clients with up-to-date technology. In order to provide the as-built information, R/M was able to collect 3D terrestrial scan information and provide a point cloud for client modeling needs.

Project Highlights

  • Storm water management was key to protect the wetlands from being drowned or dried out, which led to rain garden design.

  • Experiences with development and expansion of substations was highly beneficial, especially understanding the utility company’s standards.

  • R/M brought novel ideas to the table when needed, including new technologies to do processes they have seen many times before such as 3D scanning for sag surveys.

  • Safety is of utmost importance. R/M was able to provide our client with high quality data (sag surveys and as-built information) without requiring our surveys to be subject to hazardous conditions (remain offsite).
